Whatever? Hold on?scratch that. I抎 never say a thing like that nor think that way. But it would抳e been hard to believe but here I am now, listening to the latest COLD CD and diggin?it like hell. Now I抳e no knowledge about their previous albums so I cannot even begin to compare them so I抣l just start on a clean plate.

COLD comes from Jacksonville, Florida and if I remember correctly this is their third CD so far even though they抳e been around for a remarkable 15 years already. They are/were labelled as Nu-Metal, which rings off a wrong chord for many a Metal fan. But you also gotta remember that a lot of bands that aren抰 even Nu-Metal gets thrown in there just for the sake of having something similar, like being a relatively new band and coming from USA and playing something vaguely reminding KORN or LINKIN PARK or whatever. In COLD抯 case the categorisation is understandable even though pretty far stretched. I抎 prefer to call them Modern or Hard Rock.

But in truth this music is very commercial. Melancholic Rock for the teenage angst. 揌e/she left me. No one understands me. Everything is going so f*cking wrong?kind of stuff. Conveniently tailor made some might say. How many bands are there doing stuff like this nowadays? STAIND comes to mind most of all. But guess what? This is damn good! Where so many have failed COLD succeeds, how do they do it? Well I抦 not sure myself but I抣l try to give some light to the matter.

For one Scooter Ward has a really good voice. Reminds me of 揟en?era Eddie Vedder. He has that certain conviction, certain pain showing through that just convinces me. I read somewhere that both his sister AND his girlfriend were diagnosed for cancer and he wrote the songs trying to deal with that and the stress from playing packed houses night after night for 18 or so months in a row. And the pain and despair really shows. He really has that credibility most of his genre colleagues are missing.

The songs are really catchy but still have a good drive. Lots of sad happy guitar melodies along with vocal harmonies and simply perfect choruses that just begs to be listened again and again and sung along to. I know, I抦 just a sucker for those. But even though the songs are really catchy (they WILL stick to your head for a long time) they are far from being sappy or pretentious. Mostly that is because there抯 still that Rock credibility in COLD抯 sound. A little dirty, rough edged sound under the polished and saddened Rock that makes this just irresistible.

英文名字叫year of spider
中文名字叫“蜘蛛之年”
中文不是我翻译的，是丫自己翻译了印在在美国发行的专辑里的。
而且，year of spider大概是套用中国的“龙年”“鸡年”……攒出来的“蜘蛛年”。

当时买的时候，就是觉得cover的风格太2了，用前两年的话叫tmd“哈日”，就是想看看美国哈日哈成什么样。

蜘蛛logo倒是以前在日本硬摇滚乐队cocobat的封里插图里老看到，而cocobat是一支极为西化的band，凶猛的吉他嘶吼，密不透风鼓点，亢奋凌厉的贝斯，再加上一路英文唱到黑的不锈钢嗓子主唱，不知道的话，差不多谁一听都以为是只西雅图hardrock乐队。

看来似乎看来小日本跟着美国屁股后头没逛闷着头跑，这几年也没少了他们老大家里播撒日本文化意识种子，于是，就有了这个乐队成员把自己名字都逐个翻译成
“史固德王”
“嘉利黑士”
“揩诺明马休”
“泰利白沙蒙”
的封套。
大概把汉语和日文一水混一块了，反正都是方块字，都跟图腾符号似的，够东方，够coool。
最后干脆，乐队名字COLD也在封面上也一本正经地写上了楷体地“寒”，看得我也是这叫一个寒……

专辑是2003年的，和stain的确有点像……

Now some of you (in the US) may have already heard the song 揝tupid Girl?and although being a very good track it is still one of the least good tracks on this CD. The term 搇east good?is used here because frankly every track here is either (very) good or outstanding. There抯 no drop in quality anywhere save for some insignificant differences. Tracks like 揜emedy? 揝uffocate? 揇on抰 Belong?and 揥hatever You Became?are merely the cr鑝e de la cr鑝e.

To sum it up this is commercial and pretty mainstream but who cares when the music is this damn good! Even mainstream bands can be good you know. Just because this might be the 搕hing?for teenage girls (of course I wouldn抰 know anything about that) it doesn抰 mean you can抰 like it too. Definitely worth checking out if you like catchy songs, good melodies that are still rough and can put aside a small Nu-Metal affinity and the whole mainstream thing. (Online February 11, 2004)
